Here at YPS, we have spent the last few weeks speaking to women all over about their accomplishments and who they are, and we have found Harsehaj Dhami to be one of the most inspiring, committed women we’ve ever met. Talented, forward-thinking, innovative, and motivated, are all just a few of the words that we could describe Harsehaj, but in truth, she’s demonstrated so much more than any word could describe. A model member of the community, a committed coder, and founder of her own successful youth organization that is now consulting with the Ministry of Education, she boasts an incredible portfolio, and she has graciously taken time out of her day to come and speak with us.
In our interview, Harsehaj demonstrated someone who has found and understood herself enough to share her story and inspire others with it, she looks at things from a new lens and finds innovative ideas and solutions to help out her community, through her work with Codespire, and in other facets. She has worked with the people around her to uplift them and herself, taking her story of someone who was not afforded the time or respect she deserved in tech spaces, and taking that to make sure everyone would be, that everyone would have the chance to be taken seriously and practice their craft in a space where they were respected and given the time of day, even if she wasn’t, correcting the wrongs through her own actions, leaving her mark on the world. She did her part, to make STEM spaces more inclusive, and countless students who would have not known the benefits of tech are all the more thankful for her actions.
She represents someone who takes action against that which she sees wrong with the world, taking the time to make it right. A definite role model not just for women and young girls, but for all those who wish to transform moments in their life in which they have felt powerless, to become the change they want to see.
Her balance with her personal life adds to that, as she takes time to connect and destress, to enjoy her life as a normal high school student, always making the best of what she’s offered, grounding herself. Inside and out, she represents not only an impressive resume but is in it of herself someone who has a story worth understanding and sharing, as she talks about how her culture and her religion have guided her, connecting her story to centuries and eons of women before her. She’s taken lessons she’s learned from before and put in the time and effort to grow from that, understanding the values of her Punjabi culture and implementing it, along the way inspiring many Punjabi Sikh women in seeing someone like them reach the height of achievement that she has.
In interviewing Harsehaj, it was as if one were seeing a story unfold of a woman who is definitely going places, of someone open to sharing that tale. There are definitely many unwritten pages left, and the YPS team is excited about what’s in store for the future. We encourage all of you to listen to the interview above and hear for yourself this young women’s impressive ideas, as she changes the world, one line of code at a time.
